There are both Cassette and CD versions of this Demo. Both are from 2005, the cassette is dated August 28, 2005; the CD says "Autumn MMV." The cassette is hand numbered out of 25, while the CD is "Necrology 001." There are two main differences between the two, the first is that the tracklisting on the cassette is:
1. Surrounded By Snakes
2. Pale, Sick Horse
3. Dying Inside (St. Vitus Cover)
And the tracklist on the CD is:
1. Surrounded By Snakes
2. Pale, Sick Horse
3. Of Sorrow and Ruin (Instrumental)
The second difference is the packaging, the CD's is much better, as the Cassette's insert is just a piece of paper.
Okay, IMO these guys sound like St. Vitus crossed with early Candlemass, only slower, heavier, and with less vocals/more instrumentation. The guitar work is awesome, the drums are full and not buried, the bass is where it should be, vocals are just right. For being a demo, the quality and sound are excellent.
"Surrounded By Snakes" is an awesome song, it starts off crawling and flows into a solo, then it picks up the pace - but only a bit. Great song. Next we have "Pale, Sick Horse", the intro to this song is SLOW AS HELL, if the guitar chords were sustained much longer I'd be tempted to call it drone. Not that it's bad, just a little too long for me (the song doesn't really get "going" until about 3:00). Right towards the end of the long intro, the guitar fades out to only drums and bass almost sounding tribal. Then the guitar and vocals kick in, there's a backwards vocal sample which sounds really cool. It crawls and "stomps" here and there up to 6:38 where they really let loose with soloing until 8:14, drones for a second, and then returns to the "stomping" chorus and finally finishes with a bang at 10:37. The last song is an instrumental one called "Of Sorrow and Ruin," this one is a bit faster than the others (not to mention shorter at only 4:20), but it's still doomy, of course. It chugs along until about halfway through it where we get a great solo, and even some wicked harmonizing between the two guitars. This song rocks, my only complaint is the way it cuts the fade out short at the end. I don't really think there is any need to discuss their rendition of St. Vitus' "Dying Inside," because it's pretty well spot on.
Okay so to recap, this is a great demo by this local Indy (and indie) Doom Metal band. Although the band isn't necessarily breaking any new ground, they are pretty damn good at what they do. The only two things I didn't like about this demo were: first, the intro to "Pale, Sick Horse" was a little long for my taste and second, the fade out on "Of Sorrow and Ruin" gets cut off prematurely. Other than that, you should do yourself a favor and get this if you like St. Vitus, Candlemass, or Southern Lord bands.
